Known for its clean, spring-fed turquoise waters that are reminiscent of the Caribbean, Walloon Lake is seen by many as the gem of northern Michigan. Carved by ancient glaciers, the lake itself holds a singular shape, with each arm possessing distinct characteristics. Green hills full of lush forests surround calm waters that are perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing. A haven for classic wooden boats, these emblems of up north lake culture are celebrated each August at the annual Walloon Woodies festival.
Morel hunters take to the woods in the spring before the lake is teeming with activity throughout the summer. At the end of the season, things quiet down again for a peaceful winter dotted with ice fishing, skiing, and an ice skating rink installed right on the shores of the lake. Delicious waterfront dining can be found at Barrel Back and the Walloon Lake Inn, while the Walloon Lake Country Club provides opportunities for golf, tennis, and pickleball with a handsome clubhouse overlooking the lake. Life on the lake is peaceful and secluded, with Petoskey, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, and Bay Harbor all a short drive away. Notably, in 2023 Travel + Leisure Magazine awarded Hotel Walloon the honor of Best Resort in the Midwest, and No.5 in the United States.
At the turn of the century, scores of wealthy industrialists and entrepreneurs built their luxurious summer waterfront homes along the shores of Walloon Lake. Many of these historic cottages still stand today, providing rich insight into the area’s foundation as a summer destination. Ernest Hemingway was only a few months old when he first ventured to Windemere cottage with his family in 1899, returning throughout his boyhood to spend the summers hunting, fishing, swimming, and canoeing. The north woods provided ample inspiration for the young writer. You’ll find snippets of Walloon Lake and the surrounding areas in “Wedding Day,” "Summer People,” “Up In Michigan,” “Big Two-Hearted River,” and many other Hemingway stories.
As a seventh generation resident of Walloon Lake and member of the Land Preservation Committee of the Walloon Lake Association and Conservancy, Wally Kidd is dedicated to keeping this slice of heaven an esteemed legacy destination.
